These are challenging times. Each of us is looking within to determine what we can do to move our community, our state, our country, and our planet forward in a new way.
I am running because people in our state and across our country are frightened and are making sacrifices for their loved ones. We’ve all seen the compassion in our community as people come together to support struggling families, but I know our government must do better, and I will work tirelessly to make that happen.
As a daughter of immigrants, a mother, a small business owner, and an activist, my experiences mirror many of yours. I will advocate for the causes our community believes in and focus on a better Michigan that effectively and compassionately serves all of its people. I will bring a fresh perspective that reflects the value of our diversity. Now is the time mobilize our vibrant community and summon the courage to move forward together.
I will listen to all voices and work hard for better jobs, healthcare, and education — tearing down the structures that hold us back. Everyone deserves a clean environment, human rights and social justice, and protection from gun violence. I am committed to proactive approaches that protect all of our communities, from sustainable environmental policies to intelligent gun-sense measures that will keep our children safe for generations to come.
One of my core values is that we must listen to all perspectives while ensuring that the government works for everyone. Senate District 18 represents the best of Michigan, yet many have been left behind. I know we can do better, and am committed to making sure that everyone in Washtenaw County is included when we work on restorative justice and criminal justice reform, affordable housing, and improving access to elder care.
As a mom of four, I want my kids — and all kids in Michigan — to have the opportunity for success. A high-quality education is the right of every child, not a privilege. Improving education for pre-K and K-12 students in Michigan is one of my top priorities, as well as post-secondary education, including workforce training, community college and four-year colleges. Our kids need to be able to get the training and education they need for success without drowning in debt.
I believe that healthcare is an essential human right. That’s why I support single-payer healthcare. No one should be denied healthcare because of their age, income, or pre-existing condition. I will fight to protect Medicaid and for complete reproductive health coverage. Everyone deserves to have coverage for mental health programs, counseling, substance abuse, and preventative care. Too often, these essential parts of health and wellness are overlooked.
We live in a global economy. Michigan has the talent and innovation to compete and thrive. But we need leadership in Michigan’s Capitol that has the vision and experience to build an economy that works for everyone. As a small business owner, I know how important access to infrastructure, training, and business development opportunities are. I am committed to making all of the 18th District and Washtenaw County a magnet for businesses and talented people with welcoming policies that expand opportunity and fairness.
We have been blessed here in Michigan with so many beautiful lakes, rivers and forests. But we’re at a critical time for our environment. “Pure Michigan” can’t just be a tourism slogan. We’re facing threats from climate change, corporate polluters, and special interest pressure on Michigan to sell off public lands. We need strong, long-term environmental policies so that our children, grandchildren, and generations to come inherit a pure Michigan.
I am a proud member of Moms Demand Action. I believe we need smart gun policy so that terrifying, senseless tragedies like the Parkland, FL school shooting never happen again. My first bill in the State Senate will be banning most concealed weapons because I believe progressives need to be proactive on gun policy. I support universal background checks, banning bump stocks, and raising the age for gun licenses to age 21. I support community-based approaches that help law enforcement and mental health professionals reach vulnerable kids and adults.
We must be a welcoming and safe state for all, no matter what your race, gender, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation may be. As the daughter of immigrants, I believe we must create opportunities for all immigrants and refugees who have so much to offer. I strongly support equal pay, abortion rights, LGBT rights, criminal justice reform, improved voting rights, and economic justice.
